What is Hot Applied Mastic Patch?

Hot Applied Mastic Patch is hot applied, pourable, aggregate filled, self-adhesive polymer modified asphalt binder with excellent load bearing and skid resistant characteristics.

What does it do; where should I use it and how does it compare to traditional crack sealants & hot mix asphalt?

Hot applied mastic patch is used to repair and seal the following:

  • Wide pavement joints or random cracks over 1-1/2” in width- Hot applied mastic patch will fill and seal cracks 1 ½” and wider. When cleaned properly hot applied mastic patch’s adhesiveness will create an excellent bond to the sidewalls of the crack. Traditional crack sealants will not work well in cracks 1 ½” and wider. The crackfiller will fail due to the fact that they are not modified to handle the severe movements. Typically crack sealers do not have aggregate as hot applied mastic patch does. When repairing wide cracks with the hot mix asphalt cut & patch repair method, a joint is cut on each side of the existing crack. Eventually the joint between the existing asphalt and the new patch will open, creating now two cracks rather than just the original one. The mastic patch bonds to the existing pavement so open paving joints do not occur. The cost of the hot mix asphalt repair is usually far greater than hot applied mastic patch due to larger crews, more equipment and additional fuels and time it takes to complete the job.
  • Small to medium sized severely distressed or alligatored pavement areas– Traditional crack sealants have been used to try to seal over these areas but because they do not have aggregate; (as hot applied mastic patch does) these areas will become slippery over time and will be a liability. Installing asphalt over the distressed area does not solve the problem. This is called a skin patch or a thin asphalt overlay. Hot mix asphalt skin patches traditionally do not last a year because hot mix asphalt does not bond as well to the existing asphalt. The patch eventually comes off the area or the cracks underneith reflect through the patch causing it to break up. Hot applied mastic patch will fill and seal the cracks in these areas where hot mix asphalt can not. Hot applied mastic patch can provide many years of service and greatly reduce further deterioration and expensive repairs. Hot mix asphalt repair method should be used on large distressed or alligatored areas and should be excavated and repaved.

  • Filling pot holes. Hot applied mastic patch’s greater ability to bond is the key here, thus sealing out water and a longer lasting repair than hot mix asphalt. Traditional crack sealer can’t be used here. Hot mix asphalt cut & patch would be more due to the large amount of equipment and labor needed to complete the job.

Potholes are trip hazards and harmful to vehicular traffic

  • Leveling approaches to manhole covers to reduce plow damage. Skin hot mix asphalt patch does not work in this situation. Leveling approaches to manhole covers are ideal for mastic patch.

Manhole covers like this are a major liability
